The Legends Vision Korea 2018 a Smash Hit

14 December 2018

Incheon– The Legends’ Vision World tour made its first-ever stop in Korea, providing its newest member, Lee Yong Dae, the chance to host in his home country. Lin Dan, Peter Gade and Taufik Hidayat joined him, and together they attracted a crowd of thousands who couldn’t miss a chance to witness the biggest-ever names in badminton.

The event informally kicked off a day earlier as Lee, Dan, Gade and Hidayat held a clinic for local youth at Incheon National University. Each Legend paired with a group of 20 young badminton players from nearby badminton clubs and hit with them, providing some advice, and showing off some trick shots, during the session. This was followed by question-and-answer and photo sessions, and the kids were overwhelmed with enthusiasm.

On December 1st, the main event was held at Nam Dong Stadium, built in 2014 for the Asian Games. The Legends were introduced one by one, following an exciting highlight video. Lee Yong Dae delivered opening remarks, and then the crowd was treated to a video message from Lee Chong Wei, who expressed his strong desire to be there in person but whom was asked by his doctor not to travel while he continues to recover in anticipation of his return to competition.

With the formalities out of the way, the fun started as the Legends took the court, along with some “local legends,” for some friendly 11-point matches. A doubles match featuring Lee Yong Dae and Yu Yong Sun versus Peter Gade and Taufik Hidayat, longtime good friends as well as rivals, kicked off the action. Next up Gade and Lee Yong Dae’s partner, Kim Gi Jung took on Lee and Hidayat. Lee was fully tested when Hidayat crossed under the net to create a 3 on 1 matchup.

Taking a break from the on-court action, the Legends led a lucky draw where fans won autographed racquets worn by the players themselves. Next up, Lin Dan faced off against local junior Kim Tae Kwan, an 18-year old who will play for Team Yonex from next year. After that, Yu Yong Sun and Lee Yong Dae each paired with 13-year-old Junior National Team members and twin sisters, Kim Min Sun and Kim Min Ji.

In the final match, “Team Legends Vision” took on “Team Korea,” as Peter Gade rotated in Lin Dan, Taufik Hidayat and Lee Yong Dae, facing off against a rotating roster of Yu Yong Sun, Kim Gi Jung and Ha Tea Kwon.

After final remarks from Lee Yong Dae, Yonex Korea President C.W. Kim, and Yonex Chairman Ben Yoneyama, fans had the chance to win personalized and signed badminton bags filled with racquets and shuttles, as well as signed t-shirts.

The excitement wrapped up with an announcement that all proceeds from the day would be donated to the Legends’ Vision legacy program. The Legends’ Vision was founded with the stated purpose to travel the world, helping to ensure a strong future and growth for global badminton. Through the program, both the Legends and Yonex strive to provide a bright future for today’s aspiring badminton stars.
